Crash blocked all westbound lanes on Bay Bridge

All westbound lanes of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge were closed Tuesday afternoon for a multi-vehicle crash, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

MDTA police said the crash was reported shortly before 3 p.m. on the westbound span of the Bay Bridge, which was in two-way traffic operations.

Several people were taken to hospitals. There was no immediate word on the exact number of injuries.

MDTA police said at 4 p.m. that the westbound span was completely shut down, but one lane has since reopened; however, a second lane will remain closed for an extended period of time for an investigation.

The eastbound span is not impacted; however, motorists may begin to backup since the bridge will not be able to operate in two-way traffic mode until the accident investigation is complete.
