In the spring of 2023, The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit healthcare watchdog, released hospital safety grades for 35 hospitals in Maryland, with several receiving top marks for patient safety.
Nationwide, the average risk of deadly infections remains high, with rates of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, central line-associated bloodstream infections, and catheter-associated urinary tract infections increasing when compared to pre-pandemic measures.
The report also noted a decline in patient experience measures, such as communication from doctors. The Leapfrog Group warns that these findings should serve as a wake-up call for hospitals to recommit to patient safety and build more resilience, as infections like these can be life-threatening for some patients.
There are six hospitals in Maryland that received an A grade, while 13 hospitals received a B grade, 14 hospitals received a C grade, and only two hospitals received a D grade. Fortunately, no hospitals in the state received an F grade.
