CrowdStrike Outage May Have Disrupted Critical Healthcare Systems, Putting Patients at Risk
In July 2024, a faulty software update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a massive global computer outage, taking down millions of systems including those in U.S. hospitals. This CrowdStrike outage disrupted the American healthcare system, leading to delays in patient care and potentially life-threatening situations.
How the CrowdStrike Outage Impacted Hospitals
A new study from researchers at the University of California, San Diego revealed the true extent of the disruption. Out of 2,232 hospital networks examined, 759 hospitals experienced network failures on the day of the outage. More than 200 hospitals faced interruptions that directly affected critical patient-care systems, including:
- Electronic health records (EHRs) and staff communication portals
- Fetal monitoring and imaging systems used in maternity and diagnostic care
- Ambulance and emergency department communication systems
When these essential systems go offline, doctors and nurses lose access to vital patient information. For example, if a patient was suffering a heart attack or stroke, it became far more difficult for medical staff to transmit CT scans or imaging results to radiologists in time to begin life-saving treatment.
The Consequences of Healthcare System Failures
Even a short IT outage in a hospital can lead to serious consequences—delayed diagnoses, treatment errors, or increased mortality rates. For patients in critical condition, minutes can mean the difference between life and death.
This event underscores an alarming reality: non-malicious software failures can be just as dangerous as cyberattacks. Modern hospitals rely on an intricate web of third-party software systems and electronic networks. When one link in that chain fails, it can cause widespread harm.
Legal and Safety Implications for Patients
While the CrowdStrike outage was not a deliberate cyberattack, it demonstrated how fragile healthcare systems can be and how easily patients can suffer the consequences. Patients and families who experienced harm due to delayed medical treatment, lost records, or communication breakdowns may have grounds for a medical malpractice claim or a hospital negligence lawsuit.
Researchers concluded that continuous monitoring and greater transparency about IT disruptions could help prevent similar situations in the future. But for those already affected, the damage is done and accountability is key.
